The figure used for this unit is a repainted Granite Guardian from Heroscape Valkrill's Gambit (Wave 10) - Warriors of Felspar.

GLACIER CAMOUFLAGE
If an Ice Elemental is adjacent to a Glacier Mountain, opponents’ figures must be adjacent to that Ice Elemental to attack it with a normal attack.

SNOW AND ICE ENHANCED MOVEMENT
Slippery Ice and Heavy Snow only count as 1 space when moving.

Weekly Update

July has been a busy month, from stating the release of Wave 2 and starting the conversion of the Dread Eye's Phantom and the Black Pearl from Mega Bloks toys to Heroscape terrain pieces, but is not over just yet. I still have more of Wave 2 to release and hopefully another update for at least one of the ships in the conversion process.

Here is the next weeks releases:

Wave 2: Into the Wild
Set 3: Nature's Throng
Xualtiaca Fire Ants
Greater Earth Elemental

The Black Pearl Conversion WIP part 1

With a hold up on the Dread Eye's Phantom conversion it is time to move on to the conversion of the Black Pearl. Now that I have a little bit of experience doing this and with the help of Rocktroll over on Heroscapers.com this should be a little easier to do. As with the Dread Eye's Phantom my black pearl is not complete and is missing a few pieces.

Rocktroll has already done a full conversion of the Black Pearl, which he renamed the Fool's Errand, and he was generous enough to share his templates with me to help speed up the process. Also, based on what he did and what he would change I have decided not to make a lower deck within the ship. I will not be doing this for a couple of reasons: first, it will take more time and second, it will not really be useable during Heroscape game play. So, I have made some adjustments to the templates and rescanned them to only include the decks that I will be using. The templates will be used to create the new decks and act as a stencil for the hex layout.

If you don't like the hex layout that I chose you will need to print/create the deck templates then you will need to print the Hex Grid and cut out the hexes to be able to trace onto your templates.

Now it is time to determine what pegs you need to keep for attachment of things like the masts, etc. then remove the rest. This is the most tedious part of the project. I used a dremel to do this. After removing the pegs it is time to do some cutting to remove stairs so that the decks will sit flat. As you can see in the pictures below you will need to cut the bottom stair off of the stern, the front stair off of the bow, and the top 3 stairs off of the 4 pieces of the upper hull.

Now a quick test fit for the templates.

I also cut the sides of the mast connectors off. Here is a picture comparing the before and after.

For the main/lower portion of the hull you don't need to remove any pegs because they will be covered up. I also want to glue the ship together so it will not fall apart, but if you want to be able to take it apart you can skip this step. I started gluing it together in sections The ship comes in 4 main pieces. I will start by gluing 2 pieces to each other.

I used super glue to glue the pieces together you want to apply the glue to the edges like so:

You will also want to make sure there is no excess glue leaking on the external portions, as this will have to be removed latter.

Now I have to decide what to do about the ugly non-realistic cannon ports...

The Dread Eye's Phantom Conversion WIP part 5

I got almost all of the painting done that I can do up to this point until I get the supplies for casting the modified ladder rungs and the cannons.

Okay, so after the priming it is time to paint the bones. I did 2 coats of an ivory color. I use water based acrylics so after painting I sealed them with a clear coat. For the clear coat here I used Krylon Satin Clear Coat.

Before sealing with the clear coat don't forget to paint the rest of the details: trim around the windows, ropes, and metal parts. I did the window trim and ropes in yellow, and the metal parts in a metallic copper.

I didn't paint this part yet because I want to match it to the cannon ports and the wash would make it darker so, I will come back to it after I am done with the wash.

I am also thinking that I will dry brush the cannon ports to reveal there detail that you can't really see unless you look closely. But I will have to figure that out after the wash too.

Time for the wash. I use a dark brown for the wash, a lot of people use black, but black is not as realistic looking because it is not natural in nature. Here are a couple of pictures of some pieces with partial washes to show you the before and after.

Here are a couple pictures of some of the pieces with complete washes.

Not sure how I feel about the figurehead but I don't think I want to take the time to change it.

Now time for a test fit! Then another clear coat, but this time I will use Krylon Flat Clear Coat.

Weekly Update

Things have been a little slow for Heroscape...not so much for everything else. But I should be able to get a lot of painting done on the Dread Eye's Phantom this week, as well as get rolling on starting the conversion of the Black Pearl.

Also, I will release Set 2 for my second Wave of Classic Heroscape. This week the units are units that love the water...which goes nicely with my ship conversions...but will the forces of Utgar and Aquialla them be able to control them?

Weekly Update

Time for another update.  Of course I am working on my Dread Eye's Phantom conversion still, but I just got some new stuff to mod for Heroscape. My wife got these camera dome covers from work:

There are so many possibilities: force fields, Sci-Fi buildings, part of a normal buildings, etc. One dome takes up 7 hexes and allows a medium figure to stand in the middle.

I also picked up this T-rex miniature from Micheal's and I finally took some pictures of it. It is about time Heroscape had a wild T-rex running about...should he be summoned by Aquilla? Or maybe Valkrill?

Now for what I know people have been waiting for...OK maybe just a few people. Wave 2: Into the Wild is ready for release! I will start the release next week. Here is a sneak peak picture and the names of the units for Set 1: Wild Warriors.

Not all figures for Wave 2: Into the Wild are pictured

The Dread Eye's Phantom Conversion WIP part 4

Well until I get supplies for casting the modified ladder rungs and the cannons I will just have to go back to painting. After thinking about how to best paint the the ship without painting the blue rubber gun ports. I decided that I would stick with the duck tape, but instead of cutting the tape to the exact shape of the gun port I would cut the pieces a little bigger and tuck them under the broken looking pieces of the hull. Like so:

It worked so much better! I didn't have them falling off as I was applying each successive gun port or when painting.

Now that I am past that little hick-up, onto the painting of the decks. I started with the top deck of the stern. Primed and cut out the hexes on its matching template. Templates found in WIP part 1.

Once it drys place the template on the deck and trace the hexes with a pencil.

This will give you a very subtle hex outline if you want to be able to use this ship for other miniature games besides Heroscape...since I think that is blasphemy I will be painting mine so they stand out a little more.

In case you wanted to know what paints I am using, they are Rust-oleum - Rusty Metal Primer (as the primer and the base coat) and Krylon - Satin Brown Boots. Here is a picture of them too.

Once it drys it is time for a test fit to see what it looks like.

I like the results so, I repeated this for the other 2 decks that I made. Now time for the lower stern deck...the one that has the bone pit/hole. Do the same as above, prime and cut out the hexes from the template. Now because of the bone pit/hole that template doesn't lie down flat. To solve this you will need to tape it down. I did it using masking tape, like so:

Once you have taped down the template you can paint on the hexes. If you are just tracing the hexes with a pencil then you don't need to tape it down.

Now the ships castle, not sure if that is what it is called, has a small piece that is apart of this deck so it also needs a little paint. So put the template down where it would lie and put some making tape on the stairs. Then because I am lazy I just used my hand to cover up the rest of the stairs to prevent them from getting painted.

Well that is all for now. Once this all dries I can start painting the bone pieces and other details.
