Well the new year has been pretty busy so far...and doesn't appear to be slowing down, so not a lot of Heroscape going on for me. Although I did get in a 6 player game this last weekend which was really fun.
On another note I found a new Kickstarter that has the potential to change the table top game world. It is called Hero Forge. Once funded it will provide the ability to make a custom mini and have it 3D printed using Shapeways. I really feel that 3D printing is the way of the future for table top gaming, it allows to to have the figure you want, not just finding a suitable proxy. Check out these prototypes they had printed.
I have used Shapeways to print out the TMNT figures that I am using for my custom Heroscape TMNT units. The detail is amazing but the figures are very fragile.
They have chosen to print in 2 materials: Frosted Ultra-Detail Plastic and White Strong & Flexible Plastic. I have printed minis from both. Michelangelo was printed in the Frosted Ultra-Detail Plastic, Rocksteady and Bebop were printed in the White Strong & Flexible Plastic, and the rest of the gang was printed in Frosted Detail Plastic. Below is a great picture showing off the difference of the 2 plastics that Hero Forge has on there Kickstarter page.
Really you want to print in the Frosted Ultra-Detail Plastic, but it is more then double the price of the White Strong & Flexible on Shapways.
Now the nice thing about Hero Forge is that it will be a WebGL allowing you to create you mini from their website without having to download an app. If you check out their video you can see how it will function. See the picture below to get a feel for what the website will be like and what a printed mini looks like compared to what you see on the computer screen.
The best part of this idea is that you can choose from so many options on so many different parts...choose the pose, race, weapons, clothing/armor, face, hair, and whatever other options they come up with. This will allow me to make squads for Heroscape that are the same, but in different poses, like a real Heroscape squad! I simply can not wait.
